So this was my day 2, but it's actually day 3 of the walking series. I always mess this up! I did this walk today. It's my first post since I've been back where I'm actually posting on the day of doing the walk. I hope to get better at posting them on the correct day so it's all fresh in my mind and I can remember how fun or hellacious it was.
This was in the red rocks in Utah. It's called Peek-a-Boo Canyon and I can see why. For the most part, he was going through a narrow pathway that had been chiseled out over time by water. It was interesting to hear him talk about that and tie it into fitness goals taking place over a long period of time.
He called this walk a progressive walk. It sounds like a type of interval training but he never actually called it an interval training. We started off relatively slow for this type of walk. I think it was 2.2mph. After the warm up, we did 30 seconds at 2.6, 30 seconds at 2.7 and 30 seconds at 2.8. We then went back down to the slower pace. We had 90 seconds of rest after that. There were five rounds of the progressive speed bursts. Some of them weren't as fast since we were going uphill. The goal was to exert more effort for 30 seconds and then more for another 30 and then more for another 30. We could do that by going uphill or by going faster. I've never done this before, but I really liked it. It helped me work on my speed without really killing my shins. However, my calves were killing me since they were sore from yesterday. I want to do more of this progressive thing.
I was able to do the full workout at the pace he set. I was definitely ready to be done by the time it was over. As he pointed out, the progressions get harder as you go along and not because he made them harder, but because each one took something out of me so there was less energy for the next one. I did it though. My pelvis didn't hurt as much as it has either. Today it was mainly my left side and I didn't really feel much on my right side. I feel like this is progress. I really need to work on finding more ways to stretch out my lower back and hamstrings. Maybe I'll work on getting back into yoga.
I'm going to wrap this up and call it at a day at this point.
